Literature Text

If he is the moon, I am a little star struggling to shine.

“Tsukishima, what are you listening to?” I asked, just as I arrived at school. There was no reply. I sighed, taking my seat in front of him, knowing very well that he wouldn’t remove his headphones for quite some time. I had known him for years now, and yet he couldn’t seem to start the day in any other way.

The bell rang, and school started. It was yet another day at Karasuno.

“Tsukishima!” I turned to face my classmate, the top ranked in class. “You have to help me revise for the exams,” I pleaded, my eyes looking for any signs of hope. There were none. It wasn’t a surprise that he was listening to music again, yet, I was not one to give up. I kept talking. In the end, he had to surrender and listen to me.

He pretends not to hear, but I never hear any music playing...

“You have to help me improve my grades. If you don’t, I’ll have to spend my vacation at school, studying!” I complained as I dramatically sighed.

“Hm? But I don’t care...”

There’s always little emotion behind every ‘I don’t care’.

I scrambled around for a comeback. “What if there’s something in it for you?” I asked slyly.

He remained silent, so I continued, “What if I promise never to tell anyone about those toy dinosaurs in your room, hm?” I smiled victoriously.

“You’re going to have to explain why you’ve been in my room, (Y/N)-chan~” he said with a smug smile, deliberately adding -chan to my name to provoke me. However, I had a plan.

“I think people would believe me if I said I got the details from Tadashi-kun,” I smiled sweetly at him.

Like anyone else, he has a cute side he doesn’t want shown to others.

He stared at me. I stared back.

“Let’s go to my house. It’s much quieter, and easier to study,” he mumbled, while picking up his bag, and walking toward the school entrance. I smiled to myself. I had finally got my way!

Once we were ready, I took out my books and we started on math. “(Y/N)..., we did this section of algebra last year! Are you that stupid?”

I cringed at his words, “Tsukishima, will you ever be nice to me?!”

“I don’t know,” was his blunt reply.

There is always a little knowledge behind every ‘I don’t know’. What were you thinking at that time?

After an hour of memorizing different simplifying and factorizing methods, I knew I was ready for the test. Tsukishima, however, didn’t accept it. “One more question” he kept saying.

Unlike other questions, which I did from textbooks, this last question was made by Tsukishima himself. Once he was done he handed it to me;
9x-7i  > 3(3x-7u)

I started on the question immediately. It was quite simple.

 9x-7i  > 3(3x-7u)
  9x-71 > 9x-21u
   -7i  > -21u
     7i < 21u

   = i  < 3u

“Tsukishima, the answer is, i is less than 3u?” I asked, sure of my answer.

“No,” he replied immediately. My jaw dropped. I was sure it was right... “Look again,” he said his voice quietening. I looked at it again, but remained just as clueless. “The answer is...‘I love you’.”

Don’t 'tell me' the moon is shining; 'show me' the glint of light on broken glass.

I was sure I was hearing things. There he was, his eyes boring into mine, telling me something I had long ago lost hope to hear. I decided I’d rather clear my mind before speaking to him again.

“I-I think I should go now...Thank you for teaching me!” I rushed towards the door, books and bag in hand, only to be stopped by a deep voice;

“I’m coming too.”

The walk to my house was a long one. Neither of us spoke.

Once we arrived, he turned to face me. “(Y/N)...be my ‘nothing’ ” he said with a poker face.

When love is not madness, it is not love. That is what I choose to believe.

“Eh?! Are you trying to pick a fight with me?!” I asked, unsure of what his motive was. Or maybe he was trying to lighten the mood with a joke? He looked at me and sighed, then snickered at my confusion.

“They say nothing lasts forever,” He started explaining, his cheeks slightly flushing as he did so. However, within milliseconds, this embarrassment vanished. “Let me repeat myself, be my ‘nothing’, ” he smirked down at me. My eyes widened, taking in what he said. Then they widened yet again, when I noticed how confident he looked saying something so ridiculous.

“Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you! I’d have anyway said yes if you had asked me normally!”

I am now the brightest and the closest star to the moon.
